<div style="text-align: center;">
This Monday, almost precisely 18 months from being diagnosed with stage III rectal cancer, Patrick was declared in REMISSION with NO EVIDENCE OF CANCER (NEC).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Patrick's repeat PET scan {after his high-intenseity, targeted radiation therapy} revealed no rapidly dividing cells! All of his physicians are in agreement that the tumor in Patrick's abdomen has been destroyed, and the Shaw's understanding is that no further biopsies or tests of this area {at this time} are needed. Praise be to Jesus!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Patrick will return to UVA for a repeat colonoscopy in approximately three months and will continue to follow-up regularly with his surgeon, radiation oncologist, and medical oncologist. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Clearly, Patrick and Emily request that everyone continue to pray without ceasing for complete and permanent healing of Patrick's body.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
However, at this moment ~ right here, right now ~ let's choose JOY!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Let's <span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: x-large;"><i>Praise the Lord!!!</i></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">And I know I've said this before {just after Patrick's diagnosis} ... but, I'll say it again. This story is still being written. In fact, I think we are perhaps simply approaching its climax. I </span>believe {in Patrick's own words} that "God will not waste [his] pain." Just wait and see. So much glory will come to the Father from this incredible testimony! Patrick's life has been saved ~ and many, many more lives will be radically changed for it. I know it!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
So proud that we serve a God who is bigger than sin, bigger than addictions, bigger than poverty, bigger than abuse, bigger that poor decisions, bigger than violence ... and bigger than cancer.</div>

Returning to the blog tonight, I cannot believe it's been nearly 3 months since it was last updated. The great thing about that is ~ it means that during the last several months, Patrick & Emily have been prayerfully waiting for Patrick's high-dose radiation to work and allowing life to settle into a relative "new normal."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Tonight, per the request of the Shaws, I come asking everyone to JOIN IN PRAYER with Patrick and Emily at this time! On September 29, 2014, Patrick is scheduled to undergo a repeat PET scan. This scan will be looking for any rapidly dividing (cancer) cells in Patrick's body. In essence, this follow-up PET scan will be used to determine if the high-dose radiation completed the job of ridding Patrick's body of all cancer.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Please agree with us in prayer that:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. the PET scan is exact and accurate</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. the PET scan reveals NO EVIDENCE OF CANCER {i.e. the tumor is gone}</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. for wisdom in those over Patrick's care plan {doctors, nurses, technicians}</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Above all, in a nut-shell, please PRAY {and believe} that Patrick is CANCER FREE!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
***</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If you are regularly praying for the Shaws, continued prayers are requested for financial security, wise decision making, and care-giver stress/emotions {for Emily}. Any and ALL prayers are greatly appreciated. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
[ please note: I have had a few anonymous comments addressed to me regarding a lack of recent blog posts. Please keep in mind that Patrick & Emily notify me when they would like this blog updated. Therefore, during times of relative "quiet" for the Shaws, I may have nothing to update. During those times, it is requested that you continue to pray for previously mentioned prayer needs and {kindly} respect my need to care for my own family as well. Thank you for understanding.]</div>

Since it's been awhile since my last update, I wanted to enlighten everyone following Patrick's story about what is currently "on the plate" for the Shaws. I spoke over the telephone with Emily about one week ago, and she told me what the current plan of action is for Patrick.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Last week, Patrick met with his new (due to moving) radiation oncologist. Most of the information he received from this physician could be considered good news. However, like most things cancer-related, it didn't come without risks and side effects. The good news is, Patrick's radiation oncologist thinks that his "new" tumor is small enough to be adequately treated with ultra-high-dose targeted radiation to the point which he may not need any further surgery. In essence, her treatment plan is for Patrick to undergo 5 (daily or every-other-day) intense radiation treatments to the tumor location, wait several months, repeat the PET scan, and {insert lots of prayer} hope that the tumor is gone and Patrick requires NO surgery in the end. She believes there is an 80-85% chance that this plan will be fully successful. Both Emily and Patrick are strongly leaning toward taking this "good chance" to avoid another surgery, but ask for your continued prayers for discernment. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As previously mentioned, if Patrick chooses to proceed with this radiation-only approach, there are physical and fertility-related side effects as well as some dangers if he should fall in the 15-20% of the population in which radiation does not fully eradicate the tumor. Should this happen, the radiation oncologist informed the Shaws that the less invasive surgery (in which Patrick's organs are NOT removed from his abdominal cavity) will no longer be an option due to tissue scarring from the radiation. Instead, if the follow-up PET scan reveals any tumor activity, Patrick will have no choice other than the surgery to remove both his bladder and prostate.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you can see, Emily and Patrick need your prayers. My understanding is that final decisions and the beginning of the Shaw's chosen treatment plan will begin on June 10th. Between now and then, please pray for wisdom, discernment, divine intervention, and the BEST POSSIBLE results regardless of which course the Shaws choose to take. God is so much bigger than this tumor!</div>
JenHeathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15444248443785780312noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717599170999539048.post-58937155578805881372014-05-05T22:27:00.001-04:002014-05-05T22:27:38.999-04:00Discernment<div style="text-align: center;">
Patrick's appointment with the doctor at John's Hopkins went well last Friday. They had a safe trip and were able to stay with friends on the way home. However, this physician's opinion of appropriate treatment was SO radically different than Dr. Friel's, Patrick and Emily are requesting PRAYERS FOR DISCERNMENT specifically.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The John's Hopkins doctor feels he can remove the tumor in Patrick's lower abdominal cavity without removing either the bladder or the prostate. He does, however, feel that Patrick will need rounds of IV chemotherapy post-op. This is wonderful news in many ways. However, it also poses a lot of new questions like: why do the two docs have SUCH different opinions? and will this approach invite the cancer to return? Obviously, Patrick does NOT want to lose this prostate and bladder; however, he and Emily must also carefully consider which approach will be the BEST option to keep Patrick disease free in the future. Dr. Friel believes the tissue surrounding the tumor (hence, the bladder and prostate) needs to be removed to be sure he gets "clear margins" and leaves behind no cancer cells with the potential to grow and spread. Yet again, Patrick's quality of life remains a huge consideration for the Shaws.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At present, the Shaws await another telephone conference with the John's Hopkins doctor once he consults with a urologist over Patrick's MRI results. Then, they wish to again discuss surgical approaches with Dr. Friel as he is more familiar with Patrick's entire journey and is closer to the Shaw's home.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Please pray for wisdom on the part of both physicians and DISCERNMENT for Patrick and Emily. Also, please pray the God will provide the Shaws with support people (meals, finances, errand-running) when the time of either surgery arrives as they are currently transitioning into new jobs and a new hometown.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thank you.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">Tonight I wish that I was coming to you with better news. I wish that we could together bombard Heaven with shouts of praise that "Patrick is cancer free." I cannot do that tonight. However, I am certain we will all continue to bombard Heaven with prayer for the Shaws. And we will continue to praise Him - because although we do not understand (and we even do not like) these current circumstances - He is still worthy of our praise - simply because of who He is.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">***</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">On Monday evening, Patrick and Emily received a phone call from Dr. Friel, Patrick's colorectal surgeon at UVA with the results of the biopsy he had on April 23rd. The biopsy was positive for cancer cells. Therefore, the "area of concern" seen on Patrick's PET scan and recent MRI was cancer. At this time, the Shaws have not been explicitly told whether this cancer is a "new occurrence," "recurrence," or cancerous tissue "left behind" after Patrick's surgery in August 2013. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Patrick and Emily have not yet met in-person with Dr. Friel. However, it is their understanding that his proposed treatment plan includes highly invasive surgery to remove both Patrick's bladder and prostate. For this reason, the Shaws are seeking a second opinion before proceeding with further treatment. While they agree with the "diagnosis," they are hoping that another physician may offer a less devastating treatment option.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">This Friday, May 2nd, at 1:45pm, Patrick and Emily will be meeting another doctor at John's Hopkins. Please be in prayer over the Shaws as they travel. Please pray for their safety, their expenses, and their clarity of mind as their being "emotionally overloaded" is an understatement. Please pray for a divine appointment. Let's shower this John's Hopkins physician and his staff with prayer! Agree with me in praying for this doctor's knowledge, expertise, wisdom, kindness, decision making, attention to detail, accuracy, and spirit. <i><u>Most importantly, the Shaws specifically ask for prayer that major surgery and organ loss can be avoided.</u></i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i><u><br /></u></i></div><div style="text-align: center;">Let's also lift up Patrick and Emily as they face monumental decisions once they have gathered the necessary information.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">***</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Tomorrow there will be a SUNRISE.</div><div style="text-align: center;">God will still be who He is.</div><div style="text-align: center;">God is still in perfect control over Patrick's life - and His plans are good.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="270" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/KoRaVIqVlwI" width="480"></iframe><br /><br />

Hi again, everyone.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is a simple update to let you know what Patrick's recent MRI results indicated and how the Shaw's will move forward. Like the PET scan, Patrick's MRI also showed an "area of concern" in Patrick's lower abdominal cavity, near his prostate. Dr. Friel (Patrick's colorectal surgeon) wishes to investigate this further by obtaining a tissue biopsy. The good news is: this will be a "CT guided biopsy" procedure and is minimally invasive. It will be performed outpatient on April 23, 2014.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Please continue to bombard heaven with PRAYER that this "area" is NOT CANCER. Our sincerest hope is that this will prove to be something benign like inflammation or scar tissue. Pray. Pray. Pray.</div>
JenHeathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15444248443785780312noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717599170999539048.post-30893468530779503202014-04-03T23:14:00.001-04:002014-04-03T23:14:55.919-04:00Change<div style="text-align: center;">
Patrick & Emily have undergone a TON of change over the last week. Tonight was the first time I have spoken with them (other than by text since my last blog post). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Let's begin with some PRAISES!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Shaws are officially "moved" to their new home in Lynchburg, VA. While Emily expressed that she's still slightly overwhelmed with unpacking and truly "settling" in - both she and Patrick wish to extend an enormous THANK YOU to everyone who helped them with their move. So, from the Shaws, thank you!!! They felt very loved.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Patrick is moving along through his training and orientation at his new job, and they are being flexible with his needs. Emily begins working at her new job this coming Monday.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All good things.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
***</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Patrick and Emily also have a specific PRAYER need at this time:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After reviewing the results from Patrick's recent PET scan, the tumor board wishes for Patrick to have further testing to determine the cause of the "bright spot" that was seen in his lower pelvic region. None of the physicians are concerned about the unchanged "spots" on Patrick's liver and lungs and feel they are unrelated to cancer. There is, however, continued "concern" (without definite labeling) about the spot seen in Patrick's pelvis.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Patrick has an MRI schedule for around 7 pm on Monday, April 7th, 2014 at UVA. He has asked everyone to pray specifically that nothing "dangerous" is viewed on this scan. Please pray for accurate and efficient testing, for good reading of the results, for clear answers, and for NOTHING OF CONCERN to show up on this MRI. As previously said, PET scans are highly, highly sensitive ... so there is a chance this "spot" could be inflammation and not related to cancer. That is our sincerest prayer.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At this time, there are not additional follow-up plans set after the MRI. I will update this blog as soon as I know more.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Please also pray for soundness of mind for Emily and for efficiency on the part of the UVA oncology practice. Emily expressed a lot of frustration with lack of follow through and follow up. As many of you know, dealing with "secretarial" issues like this is time consuming and draining. Please keep lifting Emily up in your prayers as well ~ as she juggles appointments, follow ups, paperwork/telephone calls, unpacking, and her own new job. She has a lot on her plate!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As always, thank you all for praying for and loving on Patrick & Emily Shaw.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Patrick and Emily came up to visit us this weekend, and it really was a time of celebration. As you know, Patrick finished his chemotherapy treatments in late January and (although he might tell you otherwise) is adapting LIKE A ROCKSTAR to his colostomy. [insert REALLY proud former oncology nurse face] The above photos are of my son, Jackson, giving Patrick his "Beads of Courage". Jackson is a survivor <span style="font-size: x-small;">(of Progressive Infantile Scoliosis)</span> as well!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">(<a href="http://www.jackotaco.blogspot.com/">www.jackotaco.blogspot.com</a>)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
*But, there were even more miracles to celebrate.*</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Several weeks ago, Patrick not only got back several panels of bloodwork indicating little to no "cancer cell activity" and returning organ function ... but also results from genetic counseling. The Shaw's had undergone some bloodwork to determine whether any future children might have an increased risk of colorectal cancer. This test would basically be used to determine whether Patrick's cancer (at a young age) was due to a genetic mutation or unfortunate happenstance. Good news! Patrick does NOT carry a gene for cancer. This means that when God's timing is right, Patrick and Emily can proceed with growing their family without the worry of "passing along" colorectal cancer genes to future children.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Additionally, Patrick and Emily have been amazed at God's faithfulness in other areas of their lives. After several job interviews with Liberty University, Patrick had been put on a "waiting list" for hire. On an absolute whim, Emily google-searched eye doctors in Lynchburg. Online, she found a practice that mentioned their involvement in mission work. She mailed in her resume (although nothing on their webpage indicated they were hiring). Days later, she received a phone call requesting an interview. Well, she interviewed and they hired her on the spot. Just like that!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But, the story gets better! ... The Shaw's quickly leased an apartment in Lynchburg and began packing for their move. Then, Patrick received a phone call from Liberty offering him a job!!! Does that say something about God's perfect timing, or what?!?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Obviously, both Patrick and Emily are incredibly thankful, and so much <span style="font-size: x-large;">praise</span> is due!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
***</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
However, <span style="font-size: x-large;">MUCH PRAYER</span> is still needed. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today, Patrick and Emily had an appointment with the oncologist to review the results of Patrick's most recent PET scan. A PET scan is highly, highly sensitive and can "indicate" or "mark" something as benign as inflammation. In addition to the previous "spots" on Patrick's liver and lungs still being present on this scan, the doctor noted a new "bright spot" low in Patrick's pelvic cavity. Unsure of the reason for this "bright spot," the doctor is presenting Patrick's case before a tumor board on Wednesday of this week to gather opinions as to whether this indicates recurring cancer. Emily informed me this afternoon that while the doctor DOES NOT THINK this is cancer, he is VERY UNSURE. If the lesion is cancerous, Patrick will be unable to undergo radiation in this area. Removal of this lesion will require highly invasive surgery and result in the removal/loss of all organs in Patrick's pelvic cavity. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Those words are so difficult to write ... especially in the wake of such wonderful news for the Shaw's.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Please agree with me in prayer!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Let's lift up Patrick and Emily right now. Let's ask God to comfort them in this time of shock and confusion. Let's pray for Heavenly wisdom imparted upon the physicians. Let's petition the Lord to TAKE AWAY anything harmful from Patrick's body. Let's pray for an end to this cancer!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thank you.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
God bless!<br />

Wow! It's been awhile since I've updated this blog. And, mostly, that's a good thing.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Today was a BIG day!</div>

Praise Jesus! (really … praise Jesus) This "leg" of Patrick's journey is O . V . E . R !!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Still ahead of Patrick are two final (I love that word in this case) weeks of oral chemotherapy, several blood panels, a PET scan, and a genetic study (to rule out a colon cancer gene). These last steps are to hopefully banish every cancer cell in his body … then to give Patrick a thorough "once over" medically to check for any cancer cells AND to ensure all bodily organs are functioning normally again.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is a time for celebration!</div>

This is also another CALL TO PRAYER!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Let's agree in Christ:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. To help ease Patrick's final recovery from chemo infusion … to reduce nausea, fatigue, and neuropathy.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. To anoint Patrick's body … to wash a healing over every cell inside … to destroy every last cancer cell FOREVER.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. To heal Patrick's body from chemotherapy and radiation … to make it whole again!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. To protect Emily and Patrick physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, and spiritually as they transition into a new "era" of their lives as "intense treatment" is coming to a near-close.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. To surround Patrick with protection … to put and keep him in remission … to one day declare him CANCER FREE per God's will.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
6. For Patrick as he interviews for job positions.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
7. For Patrick and Emily as they make decisions over employment and living arrangements.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
8. For Patrick and Emily as they make decisions for their marriage and family moving forward after … well … KICKING CANCER's BUTT (no pun intended). :)</div>

New prayer request!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Patrick and Emily have requested prayer for another important area in their lives. A few months ago, Patrick was unable to keep his position as youth minister with his church. He is now actively seeking employment. Patrick and Emily are earnestly seeking the Lord's direction as this was an unexpected change. They are both certain that He is <i>always</i> good and will lead them where He intends to use them for His glory! (oh, how the Shaws continuously inspire me!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Please be in prayer for the Shaws as Patrick applies for positions, seeks God's will, and as they prepare for possible career changes and a possible move (or not).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Emily and Patrick continue to thank you for your love, support, and tireless prayers!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Wishing everyone a Happy and Blessed New Year from the Shaws!</div>

Hello followers!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Patrick wanted me to update everyone that his chemotherapy infusion schedule has changed a little due to unexpected circumstances. As many of you know, a few weeks ago, there was an unfortunate occurrence in which the needle slipped from Patrick's vein during an infusion. This caused his chemo to leak into his arm tissue. This leakage led to severe lymphedema which has been somewhat "risky" for infection, painful, and mobility limiting for Patrick (the swelling makes it difficult for P to bend/use his right arm). He is also having to attend therapy sessions in order to move the fluid out of the tissues.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Due to this, Patrick's care team thought it would be best to "install" a PICC line (central line) in Patrick's arm. This will allow Patrick's chemo and premeds to infuse through a port instead of Patrick having to be stuck each time with a new needed for infusion. This is both good and bad. It's good because it will mean less chance for error or slippage ... and fewer pokes for Patrick. It's "bad" because it can be another source for infection and/or complications. And, simply because it was something Patrick really hoped to avoid. The silver lining is that PICC lines are often shorter-term central catheters ... and Patrick will hopefully have this removed before long.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
He got his PICC line this Monday (before Christmas), and therefore did not receive chemo that day as planned. His 5th (of 6) chemotherapy infusion will take place on Monday, December 30th ... and the schedule will resume from there as planned.</div>

Call to Prayer:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hello family, friends, and followers of Patrick's journey! This past Monday, Patrick underwent his 4th round of IV chemotherapy at the Hope Center. This means he has made it over the midway "hump" of treatment ... and only has two remaining infusions! :) Overall, Patrick's side effects from the chemotherapy have been well-managed after his initial infusion. His nausea and vomiting have been under control, although he is still very tired.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
* * *</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Unfortunately, Patrick experienced an unusual mishap this Monday for which he has requested prayer. The needle that was infusing the chemotherapy into his body became accidentally dislodged. This means that the needle slipped out of Patrick's vein (where it was supposed to be) but not completely out of his arm. Before he realized it, a substantial amount of the IV chemo had "run" into the subcutaneous tissue of his arm. Emily said that his arm was nearly twice its proper size. Patrick was discharged with instructions to apply compresses to the arm to encourage the fluid to either absorb into the body or come out of his arm. Although not a "life-or-death" issue, this has not been a pleasant experience for Emily and Patrick. He is on high-alert to watch for signs of infection or tissue damage to that arm, and he is in significant pain. Please pray for the chemo to quickly travel where it needs to go and for comfort for Patrick. Pray God's protection against infection and cell damage as well!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And, as always, please continue to lift up BOTH Patrick and Emily in spirit as they face the many expected ...... and very unexpected ...... challenges of fighting cancer.</div>
JenHeathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15444248443785780312noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717599170999539048.post-22537573434092655702013-11-06T22:25:00.002-05:002013-11-06T22:25:59.258-05:00Cycle Three<div style="text-align: center;">
This coming Monday (11/11/13), Patrick will undergo his third chemotherapy infusion at the Hope Center in his hometown. This will mark the HALF WAY point in his IV therapy!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I spoke to Patrick this morning, and he sounded great. Currently, he is enjoying his "detox" week. What does that mean? Every third Monday, Patrick goes to the Hope Center for IV chemo. That same Monday, he begins taking his oral chemotherapy at home. Patrick takes this oral chemotherapy daily for 14 days. Then, days 15-21 (or, the third week), of his three-week cycle ... Patrick gets to "detox." That means, he does not take IV or oral chemotherapy. This gives his body an opportunity to relax from insult ... and gives Patrick a much needed break from the more severe side effects he has experienced.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Patrick wanted me to let everyone know that: "Chemotherapy makes you feel like junk! But my second cycle was MUCH better than my first!" Praise the Lord! While Patrick did experience some nausea and fatigue from his second round of chemotherapy, his doctors have calibrated his medications more appropriately now. This meant much fewer unwanted side effects.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Please continue to pray for Patrick. Specifically, pray that the chemotherapy continues to target ANY remaining cancer cells in his body and keeps them away FOREVER. Please pray for healing over his body. Lift up Emily too! Miss Em has had a series of rough weeks herself, and she greatly appreciates your prayers and support (and hugs if you are close by).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
*** A few readers have written me regarding less-frequent posting to this blog. Please remember that I post as requested by Patrick and Emily. Thankfully, the last few weeks have been less eventful; therefore, there has been less to report. I will continue to update the blog as necessary! Thanks for understanding. ***</div>

Please continue to lift Emily and Patrick up in prayer. This has been a trying week for both of them. Patrick received his first IV chemo infusion on Monday. The Shaws were very impressed with the staff and hospitality of the "Hope Center" in their hometown. That was a blessing! However, by the evening of the inflation Patrick was violently ill. After an evening of continuous nausea and vomiting, Patrick and Emily returned to the Hope Center the next day where Patrick received IV fluids and anti-nausea medication. <div><br></div><div>The following day (Wednesday) Patrick was told to return to the hospital for abdominal X-rays due to persistent vomiting after the recovery treatment on Tuesday at the infusion center did not remedy the problem. Doctors wished to rule out another bowel obstruction. Thankfully, there was no true bowel obstruction but instead a slow moving ostomy due to the pain and anti-nausea medications Patrick had been taking. Prioritizing his comfort, the team instructed Patrick to return to the Hope Center for more efforts to control his nausea and vomiting before addressing the slow moving ostomy. </div><div><br></div><div>At this time, Patrick and Emily are home again. Patrick's side effects are controlled, but he's feeling very puny. Please continue to pray for God to champion over these nasty side effects of chemotherapy and adjusting to a new colostomy. Don't forget Emily in your prayers either! She needs strength and mental stability ... And a lot of peace and understanding. </div>JenHeathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15444248443785780312noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717599170999539048.post-50950193801467417882013-09-27T21:17:00.003-04:002013-09-27T21:17:52.048-04:00Cover ThemPlease join me in covering Patrick & Emily with prayer this weekend as Patrick prepares to begin his IV chemotherapy infusions this Monday.<br />
<br />
This Monday (10/30/13) Patrick will have his first of several (4 to 6, if memory serves) rounds of IV chemotherapy. Each infusion will take place locally, at the "Hope Center" in Waynesboro, VA and will last 2-3 hours (outpatient). During the weeks between IV chemo, Patrick will take oral chemotherapy as well.<br />
<br />
Please lift the Shaws up this weekend as they prepare to embark on this chapter of their story next week. Pray for strength and sound body for Patrick. Pray for minimal and manageable side effects from this new type of chemotherapy as well. Additionally, please lift up Emily as his "care giver" and closest support person. Pray for her endurance, spirit, and sound mind.<br />
<br />
Pray for them.<br />
Hug them.<br />
Love on them!JenHeathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15444248443785780312noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717599170999539048.post-46586241284937729252013-09-22T21:24:00.000-04:002013-09-22T21:24:01.214-04:00Patrick Is Home<div style="text-align: center;">
Thank you to everyone who has faithfully lifted Patrick and Emily up in prayer. Yesterday, around 3pm, Patrick was discharged home from UVA hospital (two days earlier than expected). Turns out ... he had been virtually nausea free and his ostomy output was good ... so his doctors thought he was prepared to go home. Both Emily and Patrick were glad to be back in the comfort of their own home where they could get uninterrupted sleep and a sense of normalcy again.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I spoke with Emily today, and she said Patrick is doing well. His pain is under control, but he is still very tired and weak (understandably). Although he is hungry, Emily said Patrick is having a difficult time eating. She thinks this is partially physiological (body) ... but also partially psychological (mind). As in: Patrick is a bit afraid to eat again after his unexpected bowel obstruction. He is "taking it a day at a time," eating the foods that appeal the most to him, and trying to rest and regain his strength.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This recent hospital stay was unexpected and tiresome for the Shaws. Please pray God's protection over Patrick's body and over both of their spirits. Additionally, prayers are needed for Patrick to regain his desire to eat so that he may increase his strength and stamina.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

After awhile, Emily drove him to the ER. There, it was determined that Patrick had a bowel obstruction. A nasogastric tube (NG tube) was placed in Patrick's nose and run down into his stomach. This is used to remove stomach acid (among other things) and help relieve nausea and vomiting. Patrick was then sent to UVA and admitted to the hospital as an in-patient around 5:45am. </div><div><br></div><div>I have texted with Emily a little today. Both of them are very tired. Patrick is still feeling poorly as well. He is awaiting an X-ray to examine the placement of his NG tube. At this time, the Shaws were told that "watching and waiting" is the plan for Patrick's bowel obstruction. </div><div><br></div><div>Please remember them in your prayers. </div>JenHeathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15444248443785780312noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717599170999539048.post-59967100945033606242013-09-06T22:06:00.001-04:002013-09-06T22:06:16.329-04:00Post-Surgery Updates!!!I spoke with Emily today about Patrick's first post-surgery update. <div><br></div><div>GOD HAS DONE SOME MIGHTY THINGS WITHIN PATRICK'S PHYSICAL BODY!!!</div><div><br></div><div>First, the original tumor size was 7cm. The tumor that was removed during the surgery (post chemo and radiation) was, at most, 3.7cm. Way to go prayer warriors! Patrick's tumor shrunk nearly half its size. </div><div><br></div><div>Even more exciting: Patrick's CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) level ... a measurement used to determine how widespread cancer is within the body AND how well it is responding to medical intervention) was dramatically reduced!</div><div><br></div><div>Prior to treatment: CEA was 35.3 (less than 5 is normal)</div><div>This week: CEA was 0.9</div><div><br></div><div>How incredible is that?!? Tonight is a night of praise!</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>***</div><div><br></div><div>Now what? Here is the current treatment plan for Patrick:</div><div><br></div><div>Patrick will begin IV chemo two weeks from today (9/6/13). These treatments will be done in an outpatient infusion center every 3 weeks ... And will last 2-3 hours each time. </div><div><br></div><div>Between IV chemo infusions, the first two weeks Patrick will take daily oral chemo. He will then have one week off before the next IV chemo infusion. </div><div><br></div><div>Patrick will complete 4-6 of these 3-week cycles. </div><div><br></div><div>*** continue following for more updates ***</div>JenHeathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15444248443785780312noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717599170999539048.post-50432445952759428382013-09-06T21:51:00.001-04:002013-09-06T21:52:17.301-04:00Patrick's SermonThis past weekend I had the pleasure of spending some one-on-two time with Patrick and Emily. Even amongst the adjustments, challenges, and celebrations of Patrick's journey ... They still prove to be unconditional friends. <div><br></div><div>Patrick asked me to share a very special link (and message) with those of you who are following this blog. Below is a link to Patrick's church's web page, specifically to the sermon Patrick gave right BEFORE his tumor removal surgery. </div><div><br></div><div>If you click the link, this page will redirect you to the podcast page. For that page, you can click on the PLAY button (traditional arrow button) and listen to Patrick's words. The complete sermon is approximately 1 hour long. Enjoy!!!</div><div><br></div><div>*** if the direct link does not work, please copy and paste it into your web browser ***</div><div><br></div><div>Here is the link:</div><div><br></div><div><span style="font-family: '.HelveticaNeueUI'; font-size: 15px; line-height: 19px; white-space: nowrap; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">http://whbc.net/sermons/where-is-god-in-the-midst-of-trials-a-personal-testimony-by-patrick-shaw/</span></div>JenHeathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15444248443785780312noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717599170999539048.post-55473172645828933152013-08-29T17:06:00.001-04:002013-08-29T17:06:08.722-04:00Patrick is Home!Patrick is home!<div><br></div><div>Ring the bells and cheer aloud ... Patrick is home from the hospital!</div><div><br></div><div>I talked last evening to Emily, and she told me that Patrick had been discharged from UVA hospital yesterday about 2pm. Before he left, both of his drains and his incision staples were removed. He still has sutures in place, and these will be removed in one week. </div><div><br></div><div>Thus far, Patrick had been feeling really good since leaving to hospital for the comfort of home. Emily said his appetite had returned and, although he was "taking it easy," he was enjoying the opportunity to eat real food again. His nausea and vomiting have lessened a huge deal. Also, Patrick's pain is well managed, and he has even taken a "real" shower. Emily sounded quite proud of him!</div><div><br></div><div>The Shaws are finally taking the next few days to recoup energy at home (and relishing the ability to sleep without interruption). They continue to ask for and immensely appreciate your support and heartfelt prayers for Patrick's continued healing. </div><div><br></div>JenHeathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15444248443785780312noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1717599170999539048.post-80220517999822738552013-08-25T21:30:00.000-04:002013-08-25T21:30:16.552-04:00Nausea and Vomiting<div style="text-align: center;">
Today has been a difficult day for Emily and Patrick Shaw. Unfortunately, Patrick was unable to be discharged to come home due to continued nausea and vomiting. His ostomy has begun to work well; however, doctors have been puzzled by his continuing malaise.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After drawing some labs, doctors ordered Patrick to have a CT scan today to view his internal organs. The good news is: no "obvious issues" were discovered. However, this means that the current reason for his nausea and vomiting is an "ileus" (sleeping bowel). In other words, Patricks' digestive tract is taking a very long time to recover from the trauma of surgery. While this will eventually resolve, doctors are unable to give Emily and Patrick an exact timeline as to when it will. That means that Patrick's nausea and vomiting may continue awhile longer.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Because Dr. Friel was not in the hospital tonight, Patrick was asked to stay another night. Tomorrow he will meet with Dr. Friel to discuss how to proceed. At this time, the Shaws do not yet know when Patrick will be discharged to home.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Please pray for Patrick's GI tract to awaken and begin working properly. Also pray diligently for Patrick's comfort ... as NO ONE enjoys feeling nauseous and vomiting!</div>

All of his IV pain medications have been discontinued to move him forward with recovery; therefore, he is experiencing more pain today (even a few new pains). Prayer in this area would be greatly appreciated. </div><div><br></div><div>Within the last 24 hours, he has begun eating "regular" foods again. His nausea has somewhat subsided, but his digestive functions are still mending. Please continue praying for normal function to return and his ostomy to become active. </div><div><br></div><div>Patrick will go home tomorrow will several drains (around his surgical wounds). Over the next several weeks, he will have appointments to remove those drains as well as the staples that close his surgical incisions. </div><div><br></div><div>Please continue to lift the Shaws up in prayer ... Both for healing and peace from stress. </div>JenHeathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15444248443785780312noreply@blogger.com0
